Nairobi, Kenya 16th January 2019
The Kenya Universities Student Association (KUSA); a lobby group representing the views of over 100,000 students based in various universities across the country earlier yesterday called for the disbandment of the Nairobi County Government if the Governor of the Capital City Mike Mbuvi Sonko does not appoint a deputy governor within 7 days. Speaking at a Nairobi Hotel, the organizations chairman Mr Antony Manyara also reiterated that Sonko has violated a high court decision which called for an appointment within 14 days and a supreme court of Kenya advisory opinion which also pronounced itself on the importance of the appointment of a deputy Governor. The student lobby however asked the governor to seek the guidance of the Jubilee party constitution in appointment of the deputy governor saying the proposal by the governor to appoint a deputy from the NASA coalition in the Spirit of the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition Chief Raila Odinga would be in defiance of the party constitution.
Citing articles 179/2 and 142, and 122 of the County Governments Act and consolidation of all public interest litigation on the county the student leaders said failure by the governor to appoint a deputy as demanded will have them institute mechanisms to kick-start the removal of the county government replacing it with a caretaker body.
