PS MANG’ENI LAUDS UN ORGANIZED FORUM GEARED TOWARDS ADVANCING OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL KENYA SU

The Principal Secretary in the State Department for Micro Small and Medium Entreprises Hon Susan Auma Mang’eni has lauded the first ever forum by the United Nations geared towards advancing opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Entreprises taking advantage of procurement opportunities available at UN agencies.
Speaking at a Nairobi Hotel early today morning during the forum themed: How can sustainable procurement be leveraged for resilient and inclusive development in Kenya. Advancing opportunities for Local Suppliers Hon Mang’eni said; ” Micro Small and Medium Entreprises (MSMEs) are critical contributers to the broader socio-economic objectives including the creation of employment opportunities, increasing incomes for players in the MSME space, provisions of affordable goods and services to the consumers, reduction of poverty and inequality which makes them instrumental in the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals.”
She continued to add; ” In Kenya over 90 percent of private Entreprises are MSMEs contributing around 40 percent of Gross Domestic Product GDP in addition to accounting for 80 percent of employment in the country.
Also present during the event was United Nations Office For Project Services (UNOPS) East and Southern Africa Office Ms Anne Claire Howard who said; ” Across the World public procurement accounts for between 15 percent to 30 percent of governments Gross Domestic Product GDP depending on which country you are in worldwide. This is trillions of dollars which if spent well can sustainably impact every single one of the SDGs” She continued to add, ” Coming from the private sector I believe the private sector taking part in public procurement has significant power to impact and track the achievement of SDGs.”
Kenya has for a long time been the economic powerhouse in Sub-Saharan Africa and ranks 13th largest supplier county to the United Nations globally.
