The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection today afternoon at a Nairobi Hotel launched the operational guidelines for child protection during times of emergencies.
Speaking during the launch Secretary Directorate of Children services Mr. Shem Nyagutu Who read the speech on behalf of Cabinet Secretary madam Florence Bore Said; “our Children constitute more than half the population of Kenya making them most vulnerable during times of emergencies. Kenya has over the years experienced several emergencies and disasters such as the 2007/2008 post election violence, building collapses, floods, droughts which adversely affect children when such calamities occur”. He went on to add, ” the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC) promotes the protection of children’s rights including their rights during emergencies and Kenya has ratified the UNCRC and the African Charter on the rights of the Child (ACRWC) which have been incorporated into article 53 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.”
The guidelines will aim to address the specific needs of children during emergencies and provide a framework for coordinated and effective responses to protect children’s rights and well-being.
