CLIMATE CENTRIC COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS REJECT MEET UP WITH COP 28 PR

Nairobi, Kenya 20 June 2023

The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, a consortium of more than 1000 climate centric civil society organizations, community based organizations and indigenous groups drawn from 51 African counties has come out to publicly decline an invitation for meet up with COP28 president designate Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber.

Speaking at a Nairobi Hotel today afternoon the group declined meet up with Conference of Parties of the UNFCC COP 28 president designate Dr. Sultan on grounds of his close proximity with matters oil considering his position as Minister for Industry and Advanced Technology and Group Chief Executive Officer of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company ADNOC. In February 2019 Dr. is alleged to have signed a USD 4 Billion agreement with Oil exploration corporations BlackRock and KKR in the development of midstream oil pipeline infrastructure. And as Head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company ADNOC Al Jaber has expressed interest to increase Abu Dhabi National Oil Company crude oil production from the current 3 million barrels to 5 million barrels by the year 2030. In light of this background of Dr. Al-Jaber Pan Africa Climate Justice Alliance noted made his ill suited to fill the position of COP 28 president and a meet up with him would be seen as an endorsement of him by the climate centric Non Government Organizations.

Dr. Al- Jaber who has positioned himself as a climate change advocate is also the founding CEO of Masdar an organization that has made significant investments in renewable energy projects in 40 countries a position the Climate Centric Organizations called out as reeking of double speak.

The Conference which has been held every year since the first United Nations Climate agreement in 1992 is a platform used by government, agencies, individuals and corporations to deliberate on universal polices geared towards limiting global temperature rises and adaptation measures geared towards mitigating the negative impact of Climate change.
