The Religious Denomination the AKURINU church today under the banner General Conference of the Akurinu Churches Assembly today at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi held celebrations commemorating 100 years since it’s formation as a religious institution.

Believed to have first been formed by Joseph Ng’ang’a of Mukuruwe Wa Mangu who is said to have received a message from the Holy Spirit to pray for the liberation of the country, the church was first established in Kenya as a resistance movement challenging colonial rule and western religions in the year 1922, the outfit then named the Arathi movement, would later change its’ name to The AKURINU Church and then to Kanitha Wa Arathi or the Church of the Prophets in the year 1927.

Over the years the Church has split into various factions with numerous religious outfits springing forth from the Original Arathi Movement and subsequent sects to include: the Holy Ghost Church in 1967, the Gods Word and Holy Ghost Church in 1958, the Kenya Foundation of the Prophets Church in 1960, Christian Holy Ghost Church of East Africa also known as Kanitha Wa Katarina in 1934,the African Mission of Holy Ghost Church ( Kiragu) in 1937, the African Holy Ghost Christian Church in 1968, the Israel Holy Ghost Church of Kenya in 1972, the Holy Mission of Israel Church, the Kanitha Wa Arathi also the Church of the Prophets, the Chosen Church of the Holy Spirit in Kenya, A.K Israel or Africa Kanisa Israel, Israel Assemblies of Kenya and the East Africa Israel also known as the Africa Israel Church Association.

Other little know factions of the Church include the Seventh Day Missionary Church which was founded in the year 1963, the Holy Spirit Church of Zion which was founded in 1926 and the Africa Israel Church founded in 1942.
