Occupying a central role in sustaining the life of various flora and fauna thriving in different environments; the importance of water cannot be over-emphasized. Seemingly ubiquitous as it occupies 70% of the worlds total surface one would believe that majority of not all of human populations have access to this seemingly abundant yet precious commodity? This however holds untrue for many. The enabling of universal access to clean, affordable and adequate water within acceptable standards of hygiene for all remains a dream in many nations of the world. In Kenya for instance only 60% of the population has access to clean water and sanitation services. A coverage the Ministry hopes to rise to 80% by the year 2020 and 100% by the year 2030 in line with meeting the sustainable development goal No. 6

To implement this monumental task the Ministry estimates a budget of Ksh1.764 Trillion; this, alluded to by the Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Water and Sanitation Mr Joseph Irungu; while speaking at the First Ministerial meeting with Heads of Departments, Chief Executive Officers and Chairpersons of water sector institutions at in an event organized at the Kenya School of Monetary studies earlier this week.

An amount the Secretary reaffirms will be hard to raise considering the Ksh60 billion budget gap the continues to stare the ministry in the face annually.

Echoing the same tune and calling for improved service delivery by all the 565 employees of the Ministry Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Hon. Simon Chelangui also speaking at the event called for the need  for a clear separation of roles between the Parastatal Boards and the Management a factor that he recons would ensure increased efficiency in decision making and hence better stakeholder satisfaction. Also speaking at the event was Chief Administrative Secretary Ms. Winnie Gichu
